Retro & Chromatics - Music Obsession

This weekend in D.C. we had a free music festival of the indie type. The brain child of Dave Mann who also runs the blog "Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie". With all the bands in town ranging from indie to the underground, D.C. for the moment feels like a mini SXSW. I hope this festival will get more attention and sponsors next time. You can find out more about the event at http://www.stppfest.com/

      Chromatics
With all the music this weekend, I've been obsessing over one band that has captured my heart at the moment, the Chromatics. The band hails from Portland, OR and currently has four members (Ruth Radelet, Johnny Jewel, Adam Miller, Nat Walker). What I like is the synthpop electro lo-fi/punk sounds to their songs with an 80's feel. I hope they would contact me to do a music video. I have a concept that has a retro feel but with a Blade Runner story.

My favourite tracks has to be "Tick of the Clock" and their cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire". Both songs just inspires you for a drive at night or a road trip. I think Levi's should do a commercial with their current campaign "Go Forth". Take a listen for yourself below.

OK OK the music is from the movie "Drive". The movie is officially in my top 3. AWESOME.

Hailing from Brooklyn, this singer-songerwriter has a sultry voice, retro glamour and catchy lyrics...Lana Del Rey is a keeper, I mean, keep an eye out for her. With her song Video Games, it's a tragic Hollywood world. Pure gold and one of the best songs of 2011.

Friday's Inspiration - No More Home, No More Love - SoKo

SoKo is one of my favourite female singers, right up there with Lykke Li. When I heard her famous song I'll Kill Her, I was blown away how much power and feeling there was in her voice.  You can feel what she's been through. While moving out of her house in April of this year in Echo Park, CA, Matt Amato and Tommy Mose Abott from The Masses documented it below to her song, No More Home, No More Love.

I love SoKo, for her independence and individuality. Something you can't find much nowadays...

      Friday's Inspiration - Our Deal

Directed by Drew Barrymore and starring all the cool kids, Chloe Moretz (Kickass), Miranda Cosgrove and Donald Glover (Community), the song Our Deal by Best Coast is one or even the best music video this year! The reason why you'll love this video? It's a clash between two rival gangs, Day Trotters and the Night Creepers. Between the rivalry is a love story.

The video has a reminence of The Warriors, Westside Story, Romeo & Juliet and Grease all wrapped into one. Now that's kickass!

Washington, DC - Film Community and "District"

Since moving to DC I've noticed the film community here is very active. With events, activities, openings, ect... Known as the capitol of the USA, it should also be known as the capitol of documentaries. Coming from Phoenix, AZ, you don't bump into people who are in the industry on the streets. Here in DC, just walking down U St., 14th St. or just hanging out at BusBoys & Poets, you meet directors, producers, videographers, writers and photographers on a daily basis. All of which will talk to you about their current/past projects if you ask.

While meeting with a film buddy, we started to discuss the film community here in DC. What came out of the discussion was a channel on Vimeo called District. District's channel was created to showcase what DC has to offer to the industry. I was impressed by what DC had to offer.

There are great storytellers, cinematographers, editors and photographers who publish their work on Vimeo (TGF Vimeo). What District channel does is to showcase them. You can say we're online film curators of DC. If you would like us to showcase your video or know someone who should be showcased, contact us on the Vimeo channel or on Twitter.
